Affirmation of Baptism

You likely know this by the common term “Confirmation.” For us as Lutherans, this is not a sacrament of the church but it has become an important rite of passage for many teens. When one “is confirmed” in the Lutheran church they are affirming that the promises made on their behalf when they were baptized are something they have found value in for themselves and intend to continue in now that they are old enough to begin making their own choices regarding faith and church involvement.

Preparation

We invite students to begin the process of preparing for their Affirmation of Baptism in the fall of their 7th grade year at school. We meet during the school year most weeks and traditionally celebrate this important moment on Reformation Sunday of their 9th grade year.

Topics

We study a variety of topics throughout the just over 2 years of classes. These include:

  • Ten Commandments
  • Sacraments
  • Lord’s Prayer
  • Apostles Creed
  • Fruit of the Spirit
  • Gifts of the Spirit
  • Prayer and Worship
  • Scripture

Text

At this time, we do not use a set curriculum other than referencing Luther’s Small Catechism with explanation. Primary sources for supplemental materials are SOLA publishing, Concordia publishing, and Luther House of Study online materials.

Those with a student interested in joining the classes should contact Pastor Sara. Classes are scheduled as works for the students and families involved.
